Huge grant for Parish Church roof
English Heritage have awarded us
£196,000 towards the cost of
replacing the Parish Church roof.
The grant is in two parts – £25,000 for project planning and investigatory work,
to ensure that no unforeseen problem
lurk beneath the 165 year old slates,
and £171,000 towards the actual roof replacement.
John Meteyard, who has put in countless hours of work over three years to prepare our grant application, is ‘over the moon’.
“I am amazed,” he admitted, “that English Heritage have made such a generous
grant for a Grade Two listed building. It’s
a wonderful result.”
“This really is excellent news,” said
Illogan’s Rector, Mike Kippax, “but
there’s still a lot of hard work ahead of us before roof work can commence.
English Heritage estimate the total cost
of thework, including the investigatory stage,to be £347,000 so even with the addition of our own funds we still have a shortfall of over £110,000 and one year in which to raise it!”
Hopefully, other grant-making institutions willnow follow the English Heritage lead
and help us to plug the funding deficit, but
it is also clear that fund-raising will have to recommence in earnest.
RIght : Mike Kippax adds some long -awaited red paint to the Raise the Roof thermometer.
