A new way to walk to church

This was the scene late in January, in the woodland behind the War Graves cemetery. New trees are to be planted here to further enhance the beauty of the place.

Contractors are hard at work in Illogan, creating a new footpath to link Maningham Wood with the Parish Churchyard.

This is the second phase of a project – the vision of Illogan Parish Council – that has already seen much of the old Rectory driveway transformed into a gracious woodland and wildlife habitat.

From the bottom (north) of the woodland, the new path runs along the glebe field behind the present Rectory, then links with a long-disused lane behind the cemetery. Here, Cormac contractors had to lower the ground level by up to 2 metres – no easy task – in order to create a reasonably level pathway. The path finally emerges in the bottom corner of our churchyard, running through un-consecrated ground behind the War Graves Cemetery and joining onto the existing old Rectory path.

This new footpath is set to become an important community asset, linking old and new parts of the village and providing a safe route to and from the Parish Church, Illogan School and the Village Hall.
